چکیده

Variation in the number of genes among species indicates that new genes are continuously generated over evolutionary times. Evidence is accumulating that transposable elements, including retrotransposons (which account for about 90%of all transposable elements inserted in primate genomes), are potentmediators of newgene origination. Retrotransposons have fostered genetic innovation during human and primate evolution through: (i) alteration of structure and/or expression of pre-existing genes following their insertion, (ii) recruitment (or domestication) of their coding sequence by the host genome and (iii) their ability to mediate gene duplication via ectopic recombination, sequence transduction and gene retrotransposition.

Evolutionary interplay between sister cytochrome P450 genes shapes plasticity in plant metabolism

Expansion of the cytochrome P450 gene family is often proposed to have a critical role in the evolution of metabolic complexity, in particular in microorganisms, insects and plants. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying the evolution of this complexity are poorly understood. Here we describe the evolutionary history of a plant P450 retrogene, which emerged and underwent fixation in the c...

Emergence and Evolution of Hominidae-Specific Coding and Noncoding Genomic Sequences

Family Hominidae, which includes humans and great apes, is recognized for unique complex social behavior and intellectual abilities. Despite the increasing genome data, however, the genomic origin of its phenotypic uniqueness has remained elusive. Clade-specific genes and highly conserved noncoding sequences (HCNSs) are among the high-potential evolutionary candidates involved in driving clade-...

The homeobox genes are known to play a crucial role in controlling the development of multicellular organisms. The majority of these genes have been determined to express regulatory proteins act as a regulatory protein. These trans-acting factors regulate the expression of proteins that are necessary during the developmental processes throughout the body. TGIFLX/Y is a homeobox gene and it cont...

A census of mammalian imprinting.

Genomic imprinting, the parent-of-origin-specific silencing of a small proportion of genes, introduces a paradoxical vulnerability of hemizygosity into the diploid mammalian genome. To facilitate the evaluation of the biological and evolutionary significance of imprinting, we have collated a census of known imprinted genes, listing 83 transcriptional units of which 29 are imprinted in both huma...

Evolutionary History of the Cancer Immunity Antigen MAGE Gene Family

The evolutionary mode of a multi-gene family can change over time, depending on the functional differentiation and local genomic environment of family members. In this study, we demonstrate such a change in the melanoma antigen (MAGE) gene family on the mammalian X chromosome. The MAGE gene family is composed of ten subfamilies that can be categorized into two types. Type I genes are of relativ...
